A finished leather portrait begins with something simple: photos of your pet.

From there, the portrait gradually takes shape through a series of hands-on processes—from transferring the design onto leather to sculpting, carving, coloring, and final assembly.

Rather than reproducing a photograph directly, the artist uses your reference photos to understand the features that make your pet recognizable and translates those details into leather by hand.

Here is a closer look at how a ZOYOPAW portrait is made.

It Starts With Your Pet

You can provide multiple reference photos when placing your order. They do not need to be professional; different images can help show different details such as expression, markings, colors, ear shape, or facial features.

The artist studies these references together before beginning the portrait.

If you are new to this type of artwork, you can first read what a custom leather pet portrait is.

CRAFT 01 — Transferring the Portrait

The process begins by transferring the key structure of your pet’s portrait onto the leather.

The artist establishes the overall outline, facial proportions, and placement of recognizable features that will guide the later carving work. At this stage, the portrait is still relatively simple; its purpose is to create a clear foundation for the details that follow.

CRAFT 02 — Sculpting & Carving

Next, the leather is carefully moistened so that it can be shaped and worked by hand.

The artist sculpts the surface to build depth and dimension, then gradually carves finer details such as facial contours, eyes, nose, fur direction, and distinctive markings.

Different areas require different levels of depth and texture. This is the stage where a flat outline begins to develop a physical presence.

CRAFT 03 — Hand Coloring

Once the sculpting and carving are established, color is applied by hand.

The artist refers back to your photos while mixing and layering colors to recreate the pet’s coat, markings, eyes, and other recognizable details.

Because the color is applied over the carved leather rather than printed onto it, the physical texture created during sculpting and carving remains visible beneath the finished surface.

Preview & Approval

Before final completion, we send you a preview of the portrait.

You can review the appearance and let us know if any important details need reasonable adjustment before the piece moves into final finishing and assembly.

Preview & Approval is included with every ZOYOPAW custom portrait at no additional cost.

CRAFT 04 — Finishing & Assembly

After the portrait has been approved, the final finishing and assembly are completed.

The leather is carefully finished, assembled, and stitched by hand according to the selected portrait style. This final stage brings the individual elements together and prepares the portrait to be carried, displayed, gifted, or kept.

From Photo to Finished Portrait

What begins as a few reference photos gradually becomes something physical.

The portrait moves through four main craft stages: Transferring the Portrait → Sculpting & Carving → Hand Coloring → Finishing & Assembly.

Each stage adds something different—structure, depth, texture, color, and finally the details that complete the piece.

You can see finished portraits created through this process in our Gallery.

The process also depends on the character of vegetable-tanned leather, a material we use because it can be shaped, carved, and colored while keeping the natural qualities of leather visible.
