The leather in a handcrafted portrait is not just a background. It is the material that holds the carving, texture, color, stitching, and the small marks left by the making process.

That is why ZOYOPAW uses vegetable-tanned leather for our pet portraits.

What Is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?

Vegetable tanning is a traditional method of turning animal hide into leather using tannins derived from plant-based sources. The finished leather is known for a natural surface, firm structure, and the ability to develop character over time.

For our work, the most important quality is how the material responds to the hand of the maker.

Why It Works for a Carved Portrait

A ZOYOPAW portrait is not an image printed onto a flat sheet. The leather itself is worked.

It can be carefully moistened, shaped, sculpted, carved, tooled, colored, and stitched. That allows the portrait’s form and texture to exist physically in the material rather than only visually on the surface.

If you would like to see those stages in order, our making process shows how the portrait develops from transfer to final assembly.

Natural Grain Is Part of the Piece

Real leather is not perfectly uniform. One section may show slightly different grain, tone, or surface character from another.

We do not try to erase every natural variation. The grain remains part of the finished portrait, alongside the carving and hand-applied color.

This matters to the way the piece feels. A handmade portrait should still feel like leather—not like a plastic surface or a printed imitation of one.

Color Can Feel More Individual

Our leather portraits are individually hand-dyed and colored. The selected color gives the piece its overall direction, but slight tonal differences can occur from one piece to another.

ZOYOPAW currently offers signature leather colors including Natural, Tan, Brown, Chocolate, Black, Red, Green, Blue, and Purple. For framed styles, the frame uses the same leather color by default, while custom color requests can be left in the order notes.

Those choices allow the leather to support the portrait without turning the material into something overly uniform.

Leather Changes With Time

Natural leather can gradually develop patina as it is handled and used. Its tone and surface may become richer or more personal over time.

For a keepsake, we like that idea: the material does not have to remain frozen in exactly the same state forever. It can quietly carry signs of being kept and used.

A Few Simple Care Habits

Leather does not need complicated care, but it does benefit from sensible handling.

· Keep the portrait away from prolonged moisture and direct sunlight.

· Avoid alcohol, perfume, oils, and harsh cleaning products.

· Do not soak or wash the leather.

· Use a clean, dry, soft cloth when gentle wiping is needed.

· Store the piece in a cool, dry place when it is not in use.

A Material That Keeps the Handcraft Visible

We choose vegetable-tanned leather because it supports the kind of work we want to make: portraits with physical depth, visible craft, natural variation, and a material character of their own.

The leather is not meant to disappear beneath the portrait. It is part of the portrait.

That relationship between subject, material, and maker is one reason no two finished pieces feel exactly the same.
